Six general contractors, including one local and two from outside the state, are in the running for the contract to build the Walmart Supercenter that will be a focal point of the new Hamlin Town Center in Horizon West.
Under the Walmart system, the contractors have already been vetted by the retailer and invited to bid on a project that is expected to begin in the latter part of November and cover 191,022 square feet. It will become part of the largest town center project Central Florida has ever seen, at 150 acres.
Bids are due Sept. 24 from the contractors for what will serve as the anchor of Boyd Development’s 400,000-square-foot retail development covering 50 acres on Hamlin’s north end, which fronts SR 429, near New Independence Parkway.
Those invited to bid on the contract, which involves new construction, paving and lighting, include Winter Park’s HGR Construction. Others are further afield, including International Contracting of Elmhurst, Ill., Satterfield & Pontikes Construction of Houston, Case Contracting of Plant City, Arellano Construction of Miami and Stiles Corporation-Construction & Development of Fort Lauderdale.
The new Hamlin store in north Horizon West will become among a handful of Walmart Supercenters in Central Florida. There are two each in Orlando and Kissimmee, one in Oviedo and one in Casselberry.
As for Hamlin Town Center, developer Boyd Development Corp. is in negotiations with six to eight restaurant tenants, two to three junior anchors and six to seven other retailers within the Walmart- and Publix-anchored developments collectively.
The anchors and 12 plus additional tenants will be open and operating by this time next year, said Kevin Merideth, director of sales/marketing and acquisitions.
As part of the two developments, Boyd will begin construction later this year extending Hamlin Groves Trail to tie into Tiny Road just north of Bridgewater Middle School. The road project is estimated to cost just under $12 million, and the extension should be open to the public by next July, Merideth said.
