Duke Energy, feeling the strain of the area’s increased population, is vastly expanding its transmission facility in Altamonte Springs and will be needing subcontractors to help with the job.
The energy company, which has operated the 14-acre Spring Lake substation at 391 S. S.R. 434 since 1973, will be spending roughly $10 million to add 37,462 square feet of equipment and electrical lines to an area that already contains two buildings, with 1,133 square feet of equipment and 539 square feet of lines.
Part of the project involves adding a 45-foot fence and a fifth electrical transformer to the site. Transformers convert high voltage electricity to lower levels for use in communities.
Duke is “positioning ourselves for future growth,” a spokeswoman said.
The project is expected to start in December and be complete in June of 2017.
The company has chosen as general contractor Elite Construction, an Ocala-based GC that specializes in utility construction. The company’s website says it uses local subcontractors whenever possible. The civil engineer is Poulos & Bennett.
