The City of Sanford is seeking a local construction firm to help build a sea wall to support the third phase of its Sanford RiverWalk multi-use trail, according to an Invitation for Bids (IFB) issued this week.
At nearly 3.5 miles long and a projected cost of $15 million, the Sanford RiverWalk’s seawall should have work start this summer, according to city staff.
It will provide the protection and support needed for the planned final extension (Phase 3) of the RiverWalk, which is part of the 25-mile Lake Monroe Loop that is a joint multi-use trail project by Volusia and Seminole counties.
The third phase of RiverWalk trail will start near Sanford Hospital and stretch northwest to Interstate 4. Vision planning for it dates back to 2016, with design via CPH Engineers and Dix.Hite + Partners.
Through this process, Sanford is turning 3.5 miles of roadway corridor that hugs Lake Monroe into an established Florida Scenic Highway and trail that will accommodate all users.
The new sea wall construction project calls for installation of approximately 12,000 linear feet of new steel sheet pile sea wall and upland wall along Lake Monroe. It also includes concrete cap and handrail along the top of the wall, installation of soil anchors and fill placement behind, and replacement of about 1,194 feet of existing storm sewer and box culvert from the new sea wall, extending across W. Seminole Boulevard.
