Shannon Monteleone is executive director of the Central Florida chapter of NAIOP, a commercial real estate development association, and serves as the chapter executives' liaison to the national board of directors.
NAIOP plays an active role in the Orlando community by providing education and resources to commercial real estate professionals. An example of this is providing monthly lunch programs to discuss growth in Central Florida and how it relates to commercial development.
Monteleone broke into commercial real estate as an office manager at a brokerage and a development firm. Caught by the recession and the virtual standstill of building in Orlando, she was laid off but turned to a former employer who was a developer, and he gave her the lead to the NAIOP position. She has been in the spot since June 2008.
What she likes best about the job is that "it has kept me engaged in commercial real estate, but in a very different way. This is not a transaction-related job; it's connecting the brokerage and development communities."
When not on the job, Monteleone travels to such places as Costa Rica.
She is also a "huge" music fan and will travel just about anywhere to see a band she loves. This has led her to San Francisco to see the Grateful Dead, to Memphis to see Pearl Jam and to Atlanta to see the Black Crows.
Monteleone also describes herself as an avid reader, liking mysteries and suspense, historical fiction and "a lot of the classic novels."
