Tavistock Development Company is readying plans for a new beach volleyball facility and access road that would support its planned resort hotel in the sports and performance district of Lake Nona.
The company filed requests in late August with the city of Orlando to amend the Growth Management Plan, future land use designation and the DRI Map H Master Plan 8.5/PD Development Plan for the Lake Nona DRI parcels 10 and 11a.
Those parcels make up much of the land directly south of Lake Nona and north of Lake Nona Boulevard, where Tavistock is focusing an 11-square-mile area on sports and performance developments like the USTA National Campus, Orlando City Soccer Club training facility, KPMG's corporate training center and more.
The amendments would add land to Parcel 10 to accommodate a beach volleyball campus on the shore of Lake Nona with eight pro-sized courts for tournament use, a boardwalk leading out to a dock with six to nine finger piers, and a new access road.
The new "Spa Road" would connect Wellspring Drive (formerly USTA Boulevard) to Parcel 10, providing access to the site during and after construction, and would ultimately serve as a private drive to access a spa facility in the final development.
The sand volleyball courts, which could be open to the general public, would be adjacent to a planned 250-key resort hotel expected to further the sports and performance theme, and a planned 11.4-acre Crystal Lagoon that has been previously permitted.
"We're in the early stages of exploring what we can and can't do utilizing the southern shores of Lake Nona," Tavistock spokeswoman Jessi Blakley told GrowthSpotter. "This is in the heart of our sports and performance district, part of which we're intending to grow across a wide variety of sports."
Blakley said in the next few weeks the company could have new details and images ready to share for the resort hotel.
Lake Nona's sports and performance district is also home to the US Professional Tennis Association's headquarters, USGA Florida, Lake Nona Golf and Country Club, Johnson & Johnson Human Performance Institute, and a future Drive Shack entertainment facility expected to open in First Quarter 2018.
Tavistock's request also calls to modify the Map 8-Master Plan's DP for Parcel 11A to change its designation from Residential Neighborhood to Village Center. That would give the developer a greater range of residential, retail, hotel, office and airport support (industrial) options for the parcel, which lies south of Buck Lake
