UPDATED: DECEMBER 28, 2017 10:17 AM — Less than one year after he bought it, NBA player Austin J. Rivers sold his Phil Kean Design Group home in Winter Park last week for $2.9 million, representing a 6.8 percent profit over 11 months.
The sale price breaks down to more than $661 per square foot, which ranks 10th in value per square foot among 399 homes in Orange County sold this year at $1 million or more, according to the Orlando Regional Realtor Association. The deed was signed Dec. 21 and recorded Wednesday in Orange County.
Located in the 200 block of Alexander Place, just north of the Rollins College campus, the 4,384-square-foot home was designed and built by Phil Kean as an International Showcase Home for The National Association of Home Builders. The home won awards in 2012 for design, construction and energy efficiency.
Kean and his associate, Brad Grosberg, previously bought the property in December 2010 for $400,000. Rivers paid $2.7 million last January for the finished home.
A two-story modern design with four bedrooms and five baths, the home's exterior features an outdoor lanai with fountains, pool and summer kitchen. Inside, 14-foot ceilings tower over an art gallery, where a 40-foot art wall leads to a secluded bar area. The master bedroom covers the entire second floor, with a spa-like bathroom, three private docks and intimate media room and private gym.
The buyers were Lilly H. Donohue and her husband, John K. Donohue. Lilly Donohue is the CEO at Holiday Retirement, a senior living owner-operator that relocated its headquarters to Winter Park this year from Oregon.
Before joining Holiday Retirement in January 2016, Lilly Donohue served as managing director of investor relations at Fortress Credit Corp. She has also served as managing director of Eurocastle Investment Ltd. and Fortress Investment Group LLC; and vice president, director of investor relations and assistant secretary of Newcastle Investment Corp.
The Donohues own another home in Winter Park on French Avenue, bought in May for $1.51 million.
Rivers signed a new three-year, $35.7 million deal with the Los Angeles Clippers in mid-2016, and bought a home later that year in Pacific Palisades, a coastal area of Los Angeles, for $6.1 million.
The Clippers' coach is Glenn "Doc" Rivers, Austin's father, who also owns two homes in the Winter Park area.
Austin played basketball for Winter Park High School, and led the team to its first state title in 2010. He was ranked as the no. 1 high school player in the nation by Rivals.com and went on to play for Duke University.
Rivers' listing agent on the home was Marie Hotard of Winter Park-based Hotard Realty. She's a family member of Brittany Hotard, who has dated Rivers since high school and became engaged to the NBA player this past November.
