Bags, Inc. closes on downtown land for new HQ office, plans still in development

An affiliate of Orlando-based Bags, Inc. paid more than $1.156 million on Thursday for land in downtown Orlando, where it plans a new office building to serve as its corporate headquarters near the Amway Center.

The deal involves nine small city-owned parcels totaling approximately 1.23 acres on the southwest corner of W. South Street and S. Division Avenue, directly west of the arena's Geico Parking Garage, GrowthSpotter first reported Jan. 4.

The seller was the city of Orlando, which approved the contract at its Jan. 8 City Council meeting. 

A conceptual development plan provided to the city in late December calls for a five-story building with 84,000 square feet of office use, 5,000 square feet of ground floor retail and an attached parking garage. 

The surplus property surrounds a 0.175-acre parcel that a Bags affiliate bought back in 2009 for $425,000, which now gives the company roughly 1.4 acres overall.

No formal Master Plan has been filed by the company as of Friday for the office building and garage.

Company executives did not respond to requests for comment on Friday, but in mid-January issued a statement that building Bags' new headquarters in downtown would be special because that's where it started as City Nights Valet. 

Baggage Airline Guest Services, Inc. (Bags) began as a valet parking business at downtown's Church Street Station more than 25 years ago, and today has grown to handle valet and baggage services in more than 250 U.S. cities, and in airports and major resorts across the country.

The company would occupy at least 50,000 square feet in the proposed office building and have approximately 80 corporate management and employees there.

Bags and the city reached a price agreement that was approved by Orlando's City Council on Jan. 8. It followed a notice of disposal for the land that the city advertised in early December. 

The current Bags headquarters is located in a tourism corridor office park at 6751 Forum Dr. The company employs more than 1,800 people in Central Florida, and would operate its hiring, management and training out of the new headquarters.

Thomas Sullivan of GrayRobinson, P.A. had provided legal counsel to Bags on the acquisition.
