Culver's, a Wisconsin-based Midwestern fast casual restaurant known for its frozen custard and ButterBurgers, not to mention the fried cheese curds, is planning a second location in Central Florida in Winter Garden, a company spokesman said.
The City of Winter Garden has preliminary notice that the new restaurant will move into one of five buildings planned for the corner of State Road 50 and Dillard Street, where a run-down motel was recently torn down, said Steve Pash, the city's community development manager.
A Wawa and a Wendy's are also planned for that corner, Pash said.
Intram Investments, the developer of the corner, could not be reached for comment.
The current Culver's in Central Florida is on U.S. 27 in Clermont in an area that is locally being dubbed "restaurant row." It sits in the company of an Olive Garden, Texas Roadhouse, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Red Lobster, among other chains.
"We have a lot of people coming to Culver's (in Clermont) from Orlando," said Doris Bloodworth, Clermont's spokeswoman. "There is a cult following from that restaurant."
Culver's is on a franchise expansion plan in Florida. Currently there are 19 restaurants in the state and three others under construction, said Paul Pitas, director of public relations and communications for the chain.
"Florida has been wonderful for us," said Pitas. "We have many transplanted Midwesterners and snow birds down there."
