Unicorp National Developments has chosen a general contractor for the retail part of its $125 million mixed-use development Westside Shoppes and Venetian Isle Apartments, and has put that part of the project out for bids from subcontractors.

Scherer Construction of Orlando, which has been doing retail and other projects for three decades, was chosen as general contractor, Chuck Whittall, president of Unicorp, told GrowthSpotter. Whittall added that the project is on track to begin in January.

Bids are now being taken for the five buildings of Westside Shoppes, with the deadline being Nov. 6.

Whittall said Unicorp will soon be announcing two other retail buildings for the property, bringing the total to seven and the size of the retail complex to 70,700 square feet. He declined to discuss tenants for the additional buildings.

All told, the project will be on 49.15 acres, at the corner of Winter Garden Vineland Road and Reams Road in the county's Horizons West master-planned community.

Right now, the retail side is made up of one-story structures consisting of 12,602 square feet, 11,631 square feet, 10,569 square feet, 10,984 square feet and 7,037 square feet.

New lease agreements for Westside Shoppes include roughly 5,000 square feet for a Montessori School and 1,000 square feet to Planet Smoothie, according to Alexie Fonseca, leasing associate.

Other named tenants for the shopping center: Goodwill (1,500 SF), Panna Latin Cafe (2,400 SF), Zoom Tans (1,000 SF), Gators Dockside (6,000 SF), Flippers Pizzaria (2,100 SF), Luxury Nails (2,000 SF), The UPS Store (1,000 SF), Wesmere Dry Cleaners (1,000 SF), Porte Noire (4,800 SF), Great Clips (1,200 SF), Philly Connection (1,200 SF), Jeremiahs Italian Ice (960 SF), Tijuana Flats (2,400 SF), AT&T (1,705 SF), Dunkin Donuts (2,100 SF), and outparcels leased by Heartland Dental and Wendy's.

Roger B. Kennedy, Inc. of Altamonte Springs is general contractor for the 302 apartments the project will contain, as well as its 44 townhomes. Unicorp closed on a $20 million-acquisition last week on the 49.15 acres where it will build the retail, apartments and townhomes.

Unicorp has also set aside and given Orange County 30 acres to build a middle school at the site.
