The Winter Park City Commission voted Monday to amend its comprehensive plan to allow Unicorp to build a three-story tall parking garage with 77 more parking spaces versus a two-and-a-half-story garage for its Lakeside Crossing. The retail and restaurant project is at the intersection of U.S. Highway 17/92 and Morse Boulevard, across from Trader Joe's, another Unicorp development.
The amendment is only half approved. The City Commission will have to vote on it a second time before it becomes part of the city's code.
The project has been through a number of iterations. It started out as "The Luxe", containing 172 high-end apartments. Later the residential component was eliminated all together from the site plan, which was renamed Lakeside Crossing.
Demolition of the Mount Vernon Inn at the site has begun and Whittall expects to have the development ready in a year. He said 80 percent of the development is already leased.
A lack of parking in the area is a sensitive issue. Whittall's development across the street, which includes Trader Joe's, has sparked complaints for its tight parking lot.
