The United States Tennis Association broke ground on its $60 million "new home of American tennis" on April 8, a 102-court complex expected to open in late 2016. The facility will draw in more economic development in the form of sports-related businesses that will locate near the site, its developer Tavistock Group says.
The USTA will create 119 jobs that pay an average of $100,000 in order to get more than $1 million of state incentives for the international-caliber center planned for Lake Nona in Orange County, the Orlando Sentinel reported. To get the tax rebates and other incentives, USTA will have to fill those jobs by the end of 2017. Incentive plans also call for the association to add another three dozen jobs in 2018. And private backers must spend $55 million on the center.
The center is planned to have courts wrapped around four manmade bodies of water, parking, and indoor training facilities. The University of Central Florida is expected to have 12 courts there as a satellite facility for its varsity tennis teams. Courts will include: 40 clay, with eight red clay and 32 green clay; six indoor hard courts; 40 outdoor courts; and 16 outdoor hard courts, which are smaller than regulation size to accommodate junior players.
